Frock of the Month Club…is back!

We did a little tester in the summer of something new we wanted to try called the ‘Frock of the Month’ club, or ‘FOM’ as some of you may have seen on our Facebookpage and thought, ‘Huh?’. We offered a one time payment subscription to purchase one complete, exclusive outfit a month (for 4 months) that would be delivered to your door hassel free and full of surprises! Because the last round was a test, we just did it over the course of 4 months and put a lot of our energies into creating outfits out of fabrics that would eventually be shared with our regular frocks and so the last go had a few costumes to create that ‘exclusivity’.

Ballerina, Back-to-School, Happy Birthday and Halloween Clown (Thank you Jennifer for the photo)

This time we want to focus our energies differently, making the ‘exclusivity’ of the outfits being fabrics that we will be specially ordering for this project and not sharing with our other frocks…which is super exciting for us! Having learnt some lessons from the first go, Christina, Thamar and myself sat down today to thoughtfully plan this rounds ‘Frock of the Month’ oufits and we are all really excited!

Thamar and myself with our apparently very serious planning faces!

We will be offering two different types of subscriptions, one for Little Buddy Girls and another for 15″ Girls which could also work, in most part, for our beautiful jointed dolls as well (except for maybe the shoes). Each subscription would be for the next 6 months starting the beginning of Jan 2013 (wow, is it almost 2013?! How the heck did that happen?!) and ending in June 2013. The 15″ Girl doll outfits will include 4 different pieces each month including shoes and underpants and the Little Buddy Girl outfits will include 3 pieces each month rotating the basics. I personally think the best part is that each month something fun, designed just for you, shows up on your door step!! We had really great feed back the last time we did this and as we can only handle so many subscriptions at once, we had many people asking for months to join up. The fact that we are doing this again and including Little Buddies this time is super awesome!!

To Subscribe: We are only able to offer a certain number of spots for each type of subscription. We will offer them the same way we did last summer, through our website on Big Cartel. The 15″ Girl FOM subscription will be $250 for 6 months including shipping (add $15 if you are living internationally, outside of Canada or the US). The Little Buddy Girl subscriptions will cost $225 for 6 months including shipping (again, please add $15 if you are living internationally, outside of Canada or the US). The payment will be a one time deal and will secure your seat to begin receiving your exclusive frocks in the New Year!!! We will list the subscriptions next week on Monday, December 3rd at 12pm pst. But don’t worry if you feel like you might forget, we will remind you on our Facebook page lots over the next couple of days. Christina is ordering the first batch of fabric tomorrow and I know she is just dying to get the first round of outfits out to everyone!

If you have any questions about this at all, please contact us at and I would be happy to help you! I would also like to note, we have no problems at all if you are purchasing this as, say a Christmas gift, and you want the subscription to go to a different address other than your paypal address each month. Just send us an email, and we will change it for you 🙂 We just ask that if you choose a different address, that it is the same address each month.

Staying Connected

I know, I know I keep gripping about how much Facebook as changed for the worse. It pains me to get emails from customers saying that the don’t ‘see’ us anymore and miss certain things ,like our photo contest, because we don’t show up in Facebook feed anymore. See, Facebook has changed things for businesses. Before when I posted something on Bamboletta, everyone would see it and now, unless I pay PER post – the chance of someone seeing what I’ve posted are nil unless you change your settings to allow posts from me in your feed or you come and visit us. Anyhow, enough about that! Lol!

I’m bringing back my newsletter. This way , if you like, I can email you of contests and giveaways and all around shop news! I won’t go crazy with it – once a week max – but this way we can stay in touch a bit more. I’m also on Instagram quite a bit, it reminds me of old Facebook. You can follow me from an Instagram app or there are Instagram profile pages now. Fancy!

To sign up for my newsletter simply go to my website and put in your email address on the bottom right hand side there.

Thanks everyone!!

PS That picture is of ‘Wandering Winter’ – it’s a paper doll that was colored in by my friend’s daughter Winter. The doll is travelling around from address to address and we have to take pictures of her and send them to the real Winter. I love this idea so much that we are organizing some sort of wandering Bamboletta (but are trying to think up a different name) that we can organize amongst participating customers. Anyhow, we hope to have info about this next week. So exciting!

That would be an awesome idea to have 1 bamboletta doll to go from person to petson and visit many different places and take pictures of all those places and ER could all send souvenirs back with the dolls. That would be so cool!!!! I would live to be a stop along her way!

Christin Taylor - November 23, 2012 - 7:34 pm

That ER was suppose to be a we (my phone changed it on its own)

Maegan Davies - November 23, 2012 - 7:38 pm

I love the wandering dolly idea!

Sue Brayton - November 23, 2012 - 7:54 pm

We have lots of winter in North Dakota!

Skye C - November 23, 2012 - 8:26 pm

Okay, I adore the wandering Winter idea! That is so precious! I made a special list for Bamboletta and a couple of other pages I wanted to make sure I saw. So I can see when there are updates and just click the list. 🙂 Facebook is annoying!

Annette - November 23, 2012 - 8:37 pm

I think you should call it the Hobo-Bambo. ☺ Just out lookin’ for a place to stay the night.

Barbara H. - November 23, 2012 - 9:56 pm

Just signed up for the newsletter! And I’ve got you guys pinned on my list on facebook so that I don’t miss too much of your stuff that way, but will love having the newsletter as a back up!
And the gypsy doll idea sounds fantabulous, Willow would get a kick out of that! We are participating in a “Flat Stanley” project right now and Willow is going to send one of her own along with the one we are supposed to re-mail as a hijacker of sorts… that way she will get postcards too from all of the fab stops. 🙂

Laurie - November 24, 2012 - 8:53 am

Lovely idea Christina! I can only imagine that the wandering Bambo will bring as much cheer to everyone whose life it touches as did Stella the Bambo gnome when she traveled her adventures. I was so honored to have her. And she brought a level of activity to our home that was fun and vibrant…

Bon voyage Bambo!! See the world and share your love.

‘Available Products’ = Another Step

I’ve been waiting for this for a few years now. What, may you ask? Available Products! Chances are now when you go to the shop you will see some dolls there waiting for homes. I love seeing dolls there, just waiting for someone to stumble upon there and pick one up. The past few years have been amazing but sometimes has felt like a bit of a frenzy and it still is a bit on upload times but it has calmed down. We are now making over 80 dolls a week as opposed to about half that last year and I think supply has met demand a bit. We are still focusing in on making lots of Little Buddies (our 10″ dolls). So, why else am I excited about with this  ‘Available Products’ development? Well, it’s allowing me a bit of room to take another step.

Back at the start of Bamboletta I sold my dolls at Farmer’s Markets and at craft fairs – these are my ‘roots’. I would watch with delight as kids would come to my booth and scan the dolls and choose their perfect friend (as a side note it was usually much different than what the mother wanted!). It’s like a total ‘moment’ when they found her or him. This what really gave me the motivation to make more and to grow Bamboletta. I felt honoured to be able to be part of that little one’s childhood (in a very small way – but still!). The past few years I’ve felt that too with my online community, the pictures and emails and amazing gifts and acts of kindness have really bonded me to all of you and I’ve been inspired to grow and make Bamboletta what it is today. My online sales have come first and I never had any dolls ‘extra’ to do the markets or the fairs that I used to do. But, now with ‘Available Products’,  I have the room to do so. So, as of December 1st, I am fufilling a dream and opening up a wee store – 10”x10” (which funnily enough was always my Farmer’s Market stall size!). This store will be in Cowichan Bay, tucked away and facing the boats. We’ve been plugging away at it, painting and making the trip to Ikea and getting it all ready .. I feel like I’m a kid playing store!  I don’t think I’d be doing this sort of thing if I lived in Vancouver or even Victoria but where we are is very rural so I’m not worried about stocking issues. Eep! So excited! We hope to have open for December 1st and I’ll make sure to post on here when it’s all ready to go.

Then maybe, just maybe, in the summer I can get back to doing a few Farmer’s Markets back in Vancouver and in Whistler .. who knows?

Behind the Scenes Bamboletta Style: Frock Upload

Having a business run exclusively online (or up until our new store opening in December, squeeee!!!!!) is a beautiful and strange thing. Even though my time at Bamboletta is short compared to some, there are so many of our customers that I feel close with, like old friends, because we chat back and forth through email, we see each other on Facebook, they send me photos of their children and sometimes sweet things are exchanged in the mail…Yet there is so much distance and we never get the opportunity to look one another in the eye, or exchange a hug. These little behind the scenes posts are just another way we get to ‘pull back the proverbial curtains’ and welcome you into our little studio…so without further adieu…a behind the scenes look at doing a frock upload!

I don’t even know if this post really shows it, but with so many things at Bamboletta, you would be surprised at just how much time and effort and love goes into that little package that arrives at your door step. This post is really just my part, which is small in comparison when you factor in all the work that Thamar and Nicole put into organizing all the patterns and fabric every week, and all the love and attention that our sweet and talented home sewers put into making the clothing, or Jennie and Christy’s beautiful job of wrapping and packaging, organizing and stamping that happens every week. I’ll have to capture those elements too on some other post. I just wanted to give all those ladies props too!

So the first thing I like to tackle each week is organizing every item for the following upload. This week I started with all the Dolls for Wee Ones because sometimes it’s nice to get this all sorted and move on. When I list them, I do every colour, style, and pocket doll assortment separtely, so I like to lay them all out and see what I’ve got.

Then I like to write down every listing on these Frock Upload sheets we keep. I write them out on the forms so we have records of everything and also it makes it go a lot faster when I enter them on the computer later. I also like to tie the Pocket Dolls into their little sets with bits of wool to keep them all together.

After Thamar has quality checked all the frocks that have come in on the Monday, she hands them off to me organized and grouped together (T is an organization freak too 🙂 ). Then I sort the clothes out and list just as I did with the Wee Dolls.

After all the listing is done, I start taking all the photos! This seems like it would be the fun easy part (mostly because our photography buff Christina makes it look that way), but it takes a lot of skill and I’m still working on mastering it. One of the trickiest elements is the weather. Because we live on the West Coast, the weather tends to change about 5 times a day. There’s been days where I’m taking photos on a cloudy day then 10 mins later I’m trying to rearrange everything because the sun has come out and then all the settings need to be readjusted!

I love getting to play dress up and see our beautiful model doll in all of our talented sewers creations!

After the photo taking, I get to my favorite part, editing the photos and adding them into the listings on Big Cartel! It might seem like the strangest part to like, but I really get a kick out of seeing everything come together at the end!

Then Voila! The listings are finished and the previews are ready to be posted on Facebook!

Then when I get to work on the day of the upload, I spend about 30 mins turning off old listings and getting the new ones ready. I do this all behind the scene, so if you are visiting the frocks site right before the upload, you usually get the little ‘We’re doing some maintenance’ sign. I will have to do a follow up now of what happens after the upload and all the pulling of items and organzing and packaging and mailing, and it’s really quite a lot!

I hope everyone gets the goodies they were looking for in the upload today! As usual, I had a lot of fun listing them!!

So many cool steps. Thanks Brooke for the peek!

Help Us Decorate!

As many of you know we are opening up a little shop. I spent the day there today with my dad putting up shelving and assembling some Ikea bits and pieces. It felt like playing store, sort of a dream come true for me as I used to play store all the time when I was a kid. So fun!

I do have a wee bit of an issue though that I thought you could help me out with. See my walls? So boring! What we need are some cute child and doll pictures and I’m hoping you gals can help me out with it. So, I’m running a bit of a photo contest. I am looking for 12 pics of your children with their Bamboletta’s.  Photos chosen will be put up in our shop and the ‘winners’ will be sent a cute doll outfit!

Please send your picture to The gals and I will chose the pics on the 22nd and email the recipients then 🙂

Thanks so much everyone. It will be so nice to have pictures of your sweet little ones around the shop! It’s the perfect addition.

PS We hope to have the shop open for December 1st! More details to follow!
