The Story Behind our Cowichan Sweaters

I wanted to write a post to give you a little background info on our beautiful handknit Cowichan sweaters. As most of you probably know, our studio is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley in BC, Canada so these sweaters hold a lot of special meaning to us. If you are interested in the history of the sweaters, here’s the link to a Wikipedia article…ah Wikipedia, good ol’ informational friend ๐Ÿ˜‰

Our dolly Cowichan sweaters have beenย custom made for your 15″ Bamboletta by Liz and Marilyn – 2 amazing ladies from the Cowichan Tribe (they’ve knitted for the Pope and Prince Charles!).ย The sweaters are made with hand-spun wool also from the Cowichan Valley…this is locally made at it’s finest!

This is more then a sweater – it’s like a piece of art … very durable and warm art! And with our long and chilly winters, we gals at the studio love wearing these beautiful works of art too!

Our sweet Brandi in her Cowichan sweater with her doll friends.

There will be a select few available in today’s frock upload at 4pm PST. And we have the ladies working on something new for the dollies too, I’ll let you all know as soon as they are ready!

I am always admiring the sweaters with the amazing detail.
Just beautiful and love that Bambo is showing the local talent and bringing these things with the dolls for all to enjoy.

As you can imagine, daily stretches are high on our priority list at Bamboletta. We try to do a group stretch every lunch, or go for a walk around Whippletree, or the funniest to me is when Rachel sets the alarm on her phone to go off every hour and we stop and stretch, Pavlovian style ๐Ÿ˜‰

There are only a couple days a week that we all find ourselves in the studio together so it’s nice to take advantage and grab a big group stretch.

And yes, we really are that nerdy for each other and hug at the end. Every. Time.

Hope you are all having a great start to your week!

Friday Snapshots

I’m sort of loving the short videos right now! In case you didn’t know, we have a channel over on YouTube with a bunch of bits and pieces on it, like this video made yesterday….

We’ve also got a bunch of tutorials and little dolly videos we’ve made over the past couple of years. Is there anything that you’d like to see made ‘in film’? We are open to ideas and suggestions!

As a side note, I am heading over to Vancouver this Thursday for my Granville Island Vending orientation. As soon as I have all my dates firmed up I will post them here and on our calendar. (and I am SUPER excited about going over to Vancouver this time because I’m going to take a float plane! They fly out really close to where I live and land right downtown .. in 15 MINUTES! )

Have a great rest of the weekend!

Cassandra - March 16, 2013 - 8:58 pm

What fun! How fast that will be taking a float plane and how exciting. Never been in one. Very cool that you are going to be out old school wise meeting and seeing so many.
Well….my DD would love more Choco videos and even my son loves seeing the dolls do some fun things.
Maybe videos of all the boxes after everything is packed up to be sent off or maybe a video of a special message for someone once in awhile. Kind of like a send your picture in and then you have a shout out for that person. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope I make sense!

Keep posting.

I’d love a video tutorial of how to make the hair on the doll – a wig (instead of a crochet cap). I love your freckle tutorial and especially the sweet videos of the dolls becoming alive. They’re awesome!

A sweet birthday surprise!

Hello Friends!

So I know a lot of you probably read on our Facebook that it was my birthday this week ย ๐Ÿ™‚ ย I feel like it’s been the most magical week-long celebration. Between all of your birthday wishes and all the things that the ladies at Bamboletta have done for me, I seriously feel like the luckiest lady in the world. Best. Birthday. Ever.

One amazing and completely unexpected birthday surprise was my Bamboletta lookalike doll! They nailed her down to a ‘T’ complete with sweet nerdy glasses, bangs, top knot bun, vintage sweater, a dress that was styled after the one I’m wearing in the photo and leather boots! She even came with a wee tote bag and a tiny muffin in the bag, which is hilarious if you know me, because I show up to work with a muffin in my bag every day of the week. Yep, 5 muffins a week. Every week. Lol.

So this post is a heartfelt ‘Thank you’ to all the lovely ladies in my life for being hilarious and there for me and creative and inspiring, and, and, and…and for making this doll which is my very first Bamboletta and is very very special to me. Love her.

I hope you all have an amazing weekend this weekend! The sun has started shining here in the Cowichan Valley and spirits are high in the studio today (the Friday stuffing crazies are at the cusp of setting in, lol)…what a difference a little sunshine makes ย ๐Ÿ™‚

New Project in the Works

One of the most requested things that is asked of us is to create a doll that ‘sits’. Our doll ‘sits’ but usually after quite some time and some training (as the wool softens). I used to make this kind of doll when I first made dolls almost 10 years ago. Look at this lady – when I brought her into the studio, Rachel let out an audible gasp as she saw the state of the dolls neck. (As a side note, Rachel really has a thing about necks – she likes a well sewn neck!). This gal is SO OLD – I found her in one of my bins while cleaning out my old doll making stuff from before we moved (hey, no judgement – I STILL have a few craft bins from our old house .. like 6 YEARS ago!) I

It was an interesting bit of Serendipity with these dolls. We’ve been talking about doing a sitting doll without joints for a LONG time – but things get so busy and Thamar didn’t have the time to spend on drafting up a pattern. Then I found this doll and then I got an email from a beloved customer (hi Danielle!) about how we should make a doll that sat. THEN I was chatting with one of our seamstresses Sam and found out she is an incredible 3D pattern drafter – she just finished a puppet making project for the ‘Success by Six’ provincial government program for kids. So, I put all these things together and we are in the midst of making a new kind of doll.

The thing I wanted to stay true to was my original body shape – which I love so much and I think is totally Bamboletta. This is NOT replacing the original, traditional doll – this will be available alongside them. I feel strongly about staying true to the traditions and philosophy of what drew me to create the dolls in the first place. I guess this is why I’m doing a blog post about this new doll – it’s a big deal for us to introduce something like this.

Any how, here’s the first ‘draft’. We used all sorts of skins to make her! And this is Sam.

Then this happened .. we decided on the square shoulders.

Then we modified the feet a bit ..

We still have many drafts to go, but I thought some of you may be interested in how this sort of thing all comes together.ย  This probably won’t be available for quite some time but hopefully before the summer.
Talk soon!

Adriana - March 7, 2013 - 4:11 pm

I’m amazed by your creativity. All of you do such a beautiful job!

Cassandra - March 8, 2013 - 10:40 pm

How did I miss this! How wonderful and so exciting. So cool to see a bit of the creative process and hugging a doll and feel so good at any age but this darling looks like it will hug you back. Cannot wait to see more!
