I remember being a little one and being just fascinated with a button on a pink sweater that my Nonna had knit up for me. It was round and looked like a candy. I loved looking at that button and would spend hours just playing with it in my fingers. I remember lots of little things like that from being little, the color of my ‘Cool as a Cucumber’ tshirt, the softness of the hood of my red parka and the feeling of the back of my Cabbage Patch doll’s head. These memories have served me well in my dollmaking. I always try to incorporate details into my work. It may be a very special button on a cardigan, a soft cashmere for a sweater, a funny pattern for a kimono.. these things aren’t random- they are very much thought out because I remember being 5 and in love with a button.
I also remember being 6 and being told that I needed glasses. I was devestated! So if these glasses can help Emily’s little one just one little bit I’ve done well.
My friend Constance, seamstress extroidinaire, has made this matching Bamboletta and children’s kimono set, isn’t this so sweet?ย I’m working with Con and developing some new pieces of clothing for the dolls. I’ll keep you posted.
