Chicken Dreams… and sweet new clothes..

a1Helping Dad put in the fence.

Part of the reason why we moved out to the country was to be able to have a bit land, grow some food and watch the seasons pass. One of my country dreams was to have chickens. If you’ve been a long time blog reader , you may know of my chicken love – I know I’ve mentioned it once or twice on here somewhere. This weekend we finally got the garden/chicken area fenced off – I’m not sure this fence is high enough we have some high jumping deer here – I guess we’ll find out soon enough. My dad is coming in a few weeks time to help me build the coop and now I just have to find some chickens – SO excited about this. It’s really only me and Jasper that eat eggs – but I figure with all the people who come in and out of my house – I’m sure I can find a few takers for the eggs.

Another obsession as of late is Matilda Jane. Yes – I do longingly ogle the girl clothes – such sweet pieces. A few weeks ago I ordered in a bunch of their ladies pieces and they arrived a few days ago. I am totally smitten – the quality and creativity in the design is amazing. I feel as though the past few years have been lived in jeans and Lulu pants – it is so nice to put on a skirt again… I like getting gussied up for the ladies in the basement! John had a chuckle tonight when I asked him to watch the kids while I got changed into my ‘relaxing clothes’ –ย  he hasn’t heard me say that in years – it’s all been relaxing clothes! But… sometimes it feels nice to make the effort ๐Ÿ™‚

Now about those Little Buddies – I think I get asked when there will be more of them a few times a day! There won’t be any in the next few weeks and here is why…ย  in order to have LB’s available all sewing mama’s have to be working to their maximum. Those LB’s don’t take that much less time then the big dolls – so a sewer will make as many of those as she would a 15″ dolls. Each week it’s nice if we have a certain amount of 15″ made and for sale – it insures that everyone gets paid! So, if I have mama’s with sick kids, or that need to take it easy – or whatever then the first priority is to get the 15″ dolls done. When everyone is healthy and working then I can allot LB’s to some sewers (this goes for Babies and Snuggle Dolls too!). I also don’t have a stockpile of Little Buddy clothing here like I do with the 15″ dolls so it isn’t as easy to just make some up last minute – you know? As new sewing mama’s join us and we grow the LB’s and other dolls will become regulars on the upload cycle, but for now this is the way it is. ๐Ÿ™‚ (That was the boring – ist explanation EVER)

Love MJ, and Edens Bouquet. They do have boy clothes, check out the platinum section. Aiden has a ton of Matilda Janes boy collection (Mighty Acorns). ๐Ÿ™‚

Yep, I LOVE the Matilda Jane womens clothes!!! I have quite a collection now! And of course I love it for my daughter as well. And totally agree about the Mighty Acorns stuff. So soft and comfy. Wish she made more MA stuff, but understandable why she doesn’t.
And that is understandable about the LBs Christina! I just love them so though! ๐Ÿ™‚ I am making myself be patient for a boy LB for my son. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

I am so excited for you to get chickens. I harbour chicken dreams of my own. Sadly, my suburban backyard won’t accommodate them, at least not as it is right now. But I will happily live vicariously through you. ๐Ÿ™‚

You don’t have to live in the country to have chickens anymore. You know they passed a by-law in the city that you can legally raise chickens for personal use? Wish I was girly enough to get away with the MJ stuff. Too short. Too old. You should get some girl stuff, too. You know the Bambo creed: “If you buy the clothes it will come”. Think that pertains to girls too;)

So glad you could blog again!

Glad you can mix your love of making dolls and happiness where you live. It looks so lovely and lush!
When I starting reading about you wanting to have chickens I that WOW! Second person in the last two days that expressed this and thought it was neat too because a book I came across at work stuck out at me before you and another person talked about raising chickens.
I hope I can share the title with you and maybe you heard of it.

I too have the chicken dream. I grew up on a farm in Ontario and we always had chickens. I even made my own apron so I could put the feed in it and throw it to them just like on Little House on The Prairie.(I Loved pretending I was “Half Pint”)When we are done our stint in Paris my Husband says he owes me. Since he took us away fro Canada to the States and now here, he says I deserve a farm. With a wrap around porch, a big lazy dog to lie on it, and of course chickens!

I want chickens too but we live in a subdivision…the neighbor already moved her dog when we started havign our yardwork so I assume that chickens wouldn’t be a good neighborly act ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy yours. Let me live vicariously!

Oh chicken are lovely! We don’t personally have chickens but we live in a subdivision with 2 old farmers and they both have gorgeous free range chickens…our kids just *love* going to chat them up. And the eggs are wonderful ๐Ÿ™‚
And now I’ve found a new obsession with MJ clothes! They are Fab. Just the right combo of funky and sweet…I’ll have to go back to the website later and have a good look.

I’ve really enjoyed your last two blog posts giving insight into Bamboletta right now. I think you are growing your business in a really smart way. My DH is a CA and he has seen lots of businesses go too big too fast and lose out in the end. It’s good you are upping production but in a manageable way and good for you too as it gives you an easier transition to go from being a one or two woman show to training your staff to oversee :o)
Thanks for the info on LBs. I’m hoping to get one for my DD’s BD in the end of August so I’m happy to be patient and wait. They’ll be worth it ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks again for all you do Christina~ I’m so impressed with the way you truly care about your customers and think of them.

Oh, chickens are fun. My mother raises chickens. My advice (because you did not ask!) is if you want chickens for laying eggs, get Leghorns, if you want friendly chickens to be more pet-like, get Plymoth Rocks. Have fun with it!

How neat, I have a friend who has chickens that lay a pale blue egg. Noah likes his house because he also has a worm composting bin too. Have fun !

Hi Christina, love your post about chickens! We moved from a large town to the country some 30 odd years ago after our first child was born. When our kids were little we had the assortment (at one time or another) of raising a few cows, geese, chickens (watch out for the roosters as they can spur you, so my kids will tell you),pigeons (husband’s), 1 goat, and ponies for the kids to ride. It’s a great life, but I think it skips a generation, as 2 of my children would rather be in the city where there is “more to do”. Anyway, this year I got a few baby chicks to raise and they are about 6wks old now- just pullets for the brown eggs-nothing like a farm fresh egg! I know you and your family will enjoy! Take Care.

I’m so glad you’re blogging again. Your last post reminded me of why I fell in love with Bamboletta in the first place and kept coming back to ‘stalk’ your blog ๐Ÿ™‚
It’s not just about the dolls, but also about the person(s) behind them. Somehow, in the frenzy of trying to get a doll now, I had forgotten that it’s not about a name/brand or the adrenaline rush.

Anyways, I’d love to read more about your chicken “plans” and growing food. I have such fond memories of growing up close to my grandparents who had chickens, geese, and rabbits. And I always loved planting (and later eating) strawberries, tomatos, asparagus, etc. I know your boys will enjoy this and always remember it when they’re all grown up!

I hear you on the MJ ladies clothes!! My DD doesn’t seem to be as IN LOVE with MJ as she is with her Hanna Andersson “tutu dresses” (daydress/playdress sets she LIVES in them) but I sure do ADORE their clothes and want to host a party soon.

Good luck on the chickens!! I’m so jealous! I just found a place to get eggs (sounds kind of like what you’re planning) around by me and I’m sooooo excited! I grew up in the country, we had all kinds of animal friends (and the wild ones too who’d eat them – ok, not as fun – but still cool to have them around).

Yes! I used to have in Ukraine it is fun to have chickens! and fresh eggs.
