why wool?

I mentioned before that I’m working on a FAQ section for the website. One of the questions I get asked all the time is ‘Why are the dolls stuffed with wool?’ Well, there are a bunch of reasons why – let me explain! First off, wool is naturally antibacterial. It actually can’t sustain bacteria – […]

Christina-

Have I ever mentioned the Imagination Movers? If you’d like kids’ music that DOESN’T make you want to beat your head against a wall, check it out! I LOVE them and my kids do, too! They’re from New Orleans and even have a show on the Disney Channel, but I like their music even more than the show (which is very cute!)

They have a website and also a fan page on Facebook (your favorite website!)

-Sarah :o)

Amber - August 14, 2009 - 7:28 am

There is something really amazing about wool. It just feels homey and warm in a way that polyfill simply doesn’t. I love that shot of your little guy – I would love to cuddle up with that wool, too!

cheryl - August 14, 2009 - 12:23 pm

We want to come and snuggle up in wool! What great fun. We love John Lithgows Singing in the Bathtub. Its quite fun.

Sandi - August 14, 2009 - 1:16 pm

That’s such a great picture- it makes me smile just to look at it πŸ™‚

And I just finished reading “You Are Your Child’s First Teacher”… such an inspiring book.

Tai - August 17, 2009 - 8:16 pm

Ah wool. How wonderful you are. Looks like your kiddos love it too! I am looking for a supply of carted wool in BC. Would you be willing to share your source? The closest I’ve been able to find is in Nova Scotia!

Amy VG - August 27, 2009 - 12:15 pm

I love the book “You Are Your Childs First Teacher” as well. I was actually refering to it this morning. πŸ™‚

my favorite books..

Since the topic of books has sparked such a great discussion – I wanted to share my fav’s seeing as everyone is sharing theirs…. I usually read 2 kinds of books business/spirituality/parenting or stories. My all time favorite authors are Gabriel Garcia Marquez (One Hundred years of Solitude – once you get over trying to […]

Melissa - August 12, 2009 - 12:01 pm

Ok, before the topic moves away from books, I have to get a couple of my favourites in πŸ™‚
First, an oldie but oh soooo good is East of Eden (Steinbeck). Such an exciting, involved story that’s full of juicy ‘soap-opera’ bits. Second is Water for Elephants (Sara Gruen). This is such a beautiful, heart-wrenching story and is so vividly told that many times I felt like I was the main character, a 90yr old man who tells his story. And I just have to share that after all the Twilight talk on your blog, I have now picked up a copy and am well through the first quarter of the book. Loving it! The Time Traveller’s Wife is next on my list..

Jennifer - August 13, 2009 - 1:13 pm

I adore Time’s Arrow. It kind of broke my brain. I love Barbara Kingsolver, esp. The Poisonwood Bible, and for audio books, Margaret Atwood is pretty fantastic.

Nele - August 14, 2009 - 5:28 am

Ah! You just happened to mention two of my favorite writers… being Haruki Murakami (ever read the short story where a giant sea turtle that harasses people is overcome by putting on records of Julio Iglesias?? You gotta love it) and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. As a teenager I did not much more than reading books and I read ‘A hundred years of solitude’ in the summer on holiday when I was 14. I loved it so much I did my book report on it…. and as my teacher a. didn’t believe I had read it and b. if I had read it never believed I had understood it, I got a great big quizz about it to prove I a. had and b. did. It apparently left quite an impression cause I was known to the teachers ‘Dutch’ as the Marquez-girl for the next four years. I did mean however that they were flexible toward my book choice and I got to read ‘Love in times of cholera’ during study breaks when the nuns were in charge… Hooray for that!

Nowadays I absolutely love the essays of Douglas Adams. They are hilarious and so sharp and intelligent.

And I have no idea if he is translated in English (if not, he should be urgently) but Toon Tellegen writes the most beautiful and endearing fables about animals destined for children and adults alike. The titles say it all “Maybe they knew it all” and “When nobody had anything to do”. The stories last about 2 pages and are often a kind of an open thought… no beginning, middle or end… just a hint of a scene which spikes your imagination as to what may follow…

shannon - August 14, 2009 - 9:38 pm

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is hands-down my favorite book ever. Although, Kafka on the Shore was pretty brilliant…okay, I just love Murakami. I have been hoping that somehow, as my little guy gets older, I would miraculously be able to find time to read as voraciously as I once did. Alas, I think I read less now than I ever have in my life, except for parenting and children’s books…I suppose I’ll have to list Elsa Beskow as a favorite author these days!

Cheryl Arkison - August 19, 2009 - 7:19 am

Because you love Ian McEwan and he is my all-time fave I now need to seek out Murakami. Sounds wonderful.

HK Golmon - October 14, 2009 - 3:11 pm

love all you dolls, they are so precious

nathalie bearden - November 5, 2009 - 11:27 am

gabriel garcia marquez is one of my favorite authors, along with paulo coelho. i read 100 years of solitude in spanish in high school and i have read it many times since. have you read the alchemyst? short and sweet and such a magical story.

do you think this is creepy?

My sister does. She gets totally freaked out when she comes over and sees all the dollies in their various stages. There’s always a few heads hanging around – bodies with no hair and even better bodies with hair but no faces. Sometimes instead of faces I’ve marked the eyes and mouth out with pins. […]

Hee hee- that basket ‘o’ limbs is part creepy and part funny. Me likes πŸ™‚

CanCan - August 9, 2009 - 9:13 pm

Yes, a wee bit creepy. But I love that basket, we have a big one and a little one similar to it. πŸ™‚

Sue - August 9, 2009 - 10:57 pm

Heheheh…. I have that at times too. Lots of heads and parts.
My sister always gets a kick out of it when I say “I’m making body parts” It does sound a bit creepy!
:0)
Have a wonderful day!

Michelle - August 10, 2009 - 4:29 am

I went through serious ‘Twilight’ withdrawal after finishing all the books, too. The next thing that really caught my attention and got me excited about something other than teenage vampires was Sandra Gulland’s series about Josephine Bonaparte. After that I read another of her books, Mistress of the Sun was the title, I think. For audiobooks, I really love to listen to James Herriot’s books. I love the voice of the actor who reads them. Also, have you listened to Ruth Reichl’s ‘Garlic and Sapphires’? She reads it, herself, and she has such a lovely voice. It’s a very intersting book, too. It’s about her job as a restaurant critic and how she used to disguise herself so she would go unnoticed.

Kim - August 10, 2009 - 5:34 am

Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host: A Novel’ is really good. Not vampires but aliens invading our bodies, I have not heard the audio so don’t know the how well that is done.

Lindsay - August 10, 2009 - 7:54 am

I know im suggesting another ‘teen’ series, but try the golden compass books πŸ™‚ theyre really good…. btw- while outlander isn on itunes they are on CD and if you can get them, you can put them on the ipod! try swap tree!

cheryl - August 10, 2009 - 9:15 am

Most of what I read is childrens books and I’ve enjoyed the Percy Jackson series (lots of greek gods ) and also the Gregor the Overlander (boy and bugs underground world). My dream is to be surrounded by finished Bambolettas. They make me smile.

Amber - August 10, 2009 - 9:33 am

I think the heads would be creepier than the limbs, myself. But there is a certain weirdness to a half-completed doll. I can see where your sister is coming from.

As for not letting children see the dolls in progress, I would think even Rudolf Steiner would make an exception for the children of a professional dollmaker. As you said, there’s only so much you can do. Plus involving children in our work also part of the Waldorf tradition, and letting them see you engage in your handcrafts. I think you’re totally in the clear. πŸ˜‰

sharilyn - August 10, 2009 - 12:27 pm

SO funny! What really weirds me out is my mom’s golden retriever’s stuffed animal collection. Often when we visit thrift shops we will get him stuffed animal. He LOVES them, but he ALWAYS just eats the faces off – eyes, noses. My mom keeps all his “friends” in a basket by in the hall (right but the front door) so each time you walk in, you’re greeted with a large collection of faceless animals. UGH! but so funny at the same time.

Naomi - August 10, 2009 - 3:28 pm

mildly creepy but I love the multi-racial limbs… ha!

Aubrey - August 10, 2009 - 6:44 pm

Let’s see – books – Someone suggested the Golden Compass books – I would second those. Another kid/teen series that I really enjoyed was the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke (um, just don’t see the movie – why did they have to choose Brendan Frasier??) Outlander really is a good, not-too-serious read, or listen?, in your case. Anything by Jodi Picoult is entertaining, although I have read all of hers and she does like to follow a certain pattern. I like that she uses some of the same characters and they unexpectedly pop up in other books. Anita Shreve – another very good read and she is prolific – it would take you awhile to get through all of her books. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is another cute teen series – pretty light stuff. Now, none of these were quite as engrossing as Twilight – why is that???? How about any classics? One of my all time favorites is An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott. I have read that book at least thirty times – dork, I know. Okay, my last suggestion just popped into my head, but I loved these two books – Love Walked In and Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos. I was so happy when I read the second book and realized I could hang out with the same characters that I liked so much in Love Walked In. Just a lovely little story – nothing too complicated… Oh, and The Time Traveler’s Wife – LOVED that book – the movie looks okay…but the book was great…

Okay, I will stop. =)

PS. Um, a wee bit creepy, yes…

I can’t get enough of the Bolga baskets. Where I live, in amongst the hippies – a bolga basket and hemp pants are kind of the ‘thing’ to wear. i don’t think anyone actually thinks that way – it’s just everyone seems to have them and the hemp pants. I have about 5 of them now – I give one to each of my sewers to carry their dolls around in.

admin - August 10, 2009 - 7:48 pm

i think it’s funny too!

admin - August 10, 2009 - 7:49 pm

can’t go wrong with aliens! thanks kim, I was wondering about that!

admin - August 10, 2009 - 7:51 pm

I have read all the GC books – that was the last series I was obsessing on. Didn’t care for the movie though – it just didn’t do it for me. Now the Twilight movie – it wasn’t so great BUT they did nail Edward IMO. I’ve watched it 4 times now – just can’t get enough of it… television is all mine right now because the english soccer season starts up in a few weeks – then it’s all soccer all the time!

admin - August 10, 2009 - 7:53 pm

Thanks Cheryl and Amber. I’ve told this story before but when Ben was about 2 he would take my stuffing ‘sticks’ and push them up and down his leg .. like he was stuffing himself. Lol – I can almost hear the conversation he’ll be having with a therapist 15 years from now..lol!

admin - August 10, 2009 - 7:55 pm

That is pretty funny Sharilyn! Animals are so crazy with what they do … and moms! I

Hi, my eldest daughter absolutely loved her twilight books and was at a complete loss when she’d read and re-read them all. I gave her a book I’d enjoyed, The Island by Victoria Hislop – she absolutely loved this book and devoured it from cover to cover. She didn’t want it to end. She’s read another one by the same author since and liked that too.
Maybe you should try Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte. Isn’t it mentioned in the Twilight books – I know that the recent release has been given a Twilight inspired cover with monochromatic black and white with red flourishes. I’ve bought it for Abby to read, but she’s ploughing her way through Pride and Prejudice for school at the moment (not enjoying it so it is very slow going … I think I’ll have to buy her the DVD πŸ™‚ lol!)

Let me just say that I’m addicted to your blog! I have a baby girl who would absolutely adore one of your creations – you are seriously talented!

Roseanne Perkins - August 11, 2009 - 6:31 am

See, I am a librarian and you have awoken the reader’s advisor in me:

Other good teen reads and all are either the start of a series or have companion titles:
“Howl’s Moving Castle” by Diana Wynne Jones
“The Uglies” by Scott Westerfield
“Tithe” by Holly Black
“Sabriel” by Garth Nix
“Crown Duel” and “Court Duel” by Sherwood Smith (originally published separately, but now they are sometimes packaged togther.)

“Blood and Chocolate” by Annette Curtis Klaus is a good standalone teen book that predates Twilight by several years and is dealing with similar themes only it is a female werewolf who wants to have a relationship with a male human.

If you haven’t read them (or haven’t read them in a while) the Harry Potter audiobooks are really well done.

Neil Gaiman writes really interesting stuff for kids and adults. His latest “The Graveyard Book” is supposedly REALLY good and I’ve heard the audiobook is excellent too. I haven’t had a chance to read/hear it because both are always checked out of our library.

For adults:
Kelley Armstrong’s “Bitten” is really good…some of the later books in the series aren’t as good, but still entertaining.
The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs just keeps getting better
If you want to know what the fuss about “True Blood” is all about pick up “Dead until Dark” by Charlaine Harris.

Happy reading/listening!

Not a series, but if you haven’t read The Time Travelers Wife it’s excellent. Not sure if it’s an audiobook…

Hi Alison! Yes – the classics are my favorites! I especially love Scott Fitzgerald – Tender is the Night is in my top ten. Thanks for the recommendation of the Hislop book – I’ll give that a try.

admin - August 12, 2009 - 9:07 am

Thanks Zara!

admin - August 12, 2009 - 9:07 am

Ohh – so many books to read! Thanks so much Roseanne!!

admin - August 12, 2009 - 9:07 am

Yes – I have read it and I loved it! It was such a magical book!

Catherine - August 29, 2009 - 3:25 am

I second the suggestion of Garth Nix’s Sabriel, and would add in the follow up books Lirael and Abhorsen.. So good!

What a difference a machine makes..

I’ve posted before about sewing machines – I know. I had to write a post as an homage to my new machine-Β  I love her so much. I bought a Janome ‘Memory Craft’ 6600 and she is a sweet ride. I went with a Janome after testing out various machines over at Sawyers Sewing Center […]

I am excited for your new machine! Wow-I totally wouldn’t know what to do with that!! I appreciate all your sewing tips as I can’t really afford a doll right now but you’ve inspired me to sew my own. I check here all the time for all your updates but REALLY APPRECIATE the tips you share on dollmaking. Looking out for lightning stitch from now on!

cheryl - August 9, 2009 - 6:31 am

I so want a new machine. With the lighting stich now! I’ll be excited for you even if John is not…Yippie!!! I’m jumping up and down, really.

Amber - August 9, 2009 - 8:34 am

Wow, that is one sweet machine! I’m glad you’re enjoying it. πŸ™‚

Adrianne - August 9, 2009 - 6:37 pm

Sa-weet!!! Does this mean you can sew twice as many dolls per week? Haha (just kidding).

admin - August 9, 2009 - 6:46 pm

There is a machine that Walmart (ugh – I know) sells by Brother that has the lightning stitch and runs about $200. I’ve bought it for a sewer of mine and it works really well. It’s all about that stitch!
Good luck Andrea!! Thanks Cheryl – I SO wish you lived over here. I know I could have called you over for some sewing machine excitement πŸ™‚ Thanks Amber – she is sew-weet! ha – I am so lame. Adrianne.. that’s what John said too. Actually, it was more like – for that price it should sew on it’s own.

Lauren A - August 9, 2009 - 6:47 pm

Thanks for the tip! And regarding the blond doll, I will be ALL.OVER.THAT.My Gracie is a blondie and is turning two on Wednesday! Her sister Eva got Polly this past Christmas and has been asking for a doll of her own!

Meike - August 11, 2009 - 10:18 am

Ah yes – change the needle. I was so happy a few weeks ago when at long last I found out that THAT was the problem! πŸ™‚ I’ll be on the lookout for the lightning stitch now. I’ve got a Janome as well – let’s see if it’s on there!

Cheryl Arkison - August 12, 2009 - 7:13 am

And change the needle often! I’m a quilter and it is amazing how doing this one little thing frequently can save you so many hassles. I just did it again last night – for the fourth time in one project!
Congrats on the new machine!

mel - August 12, 2009 - 7:19 am

additional hint re: needle – change brands, some needles are a touch longer and can hit the bobbin creating an unholy mess & awful clunking noise, found out that the hard way.

admin - August 12, 2009 - 9:26 am

Yes! It is all about the needle. You can’t go wrong with Schemetz – and if you are doing doll work – then use the ballpoint needles for goodness sake! 2 things NEVER to scrimp on are needles and thread. Why go to all that effort and use cheap cotton thread – that breaks and gets all mucky in the machine. Always go German with your thread.

Maddie - August 14, 2009 - 11:56 am

Congratulations with your new machine; lots of joy to be had! I to-ad-ally agree with the quality needles and thread comment, why spend your time doing something that risks to be ruined by silly penny savings? Effort and time are not for sale :-)! I always use Gutermann thread and Schmetz needles (both from Germany). There is this great place near me that now does a 1000m cone for very little so I’m hoarding (I think it may be commercial remnants or something, and not that many colours, but if I can send you some, pls let me know).

Cheryl K-L - August 19, 2009 - 9:23 pm

I started my sewing class a few weeks go and we are using Janomes too. Not sure what model but definitely not as high tech as the one you pictured here. And I love it!!!! It’s way better than the Singer that is being held by duct tape at my mom’s house.

I almost want to buy it but I don’t do enough sewing (yet). So… maybe one day! Happy sewing!
