In Waldorf education, “(g)rade 6 focuses on doll or animal making through drawing, pattern-making, sewing and stuffing (modeling the forms from the inside-out). Attention is given to capture qualitative gestures in the animal kingdom and to arrive at harmony of colour and form in the doll. In creating the clothing for the doll, knitting, crocheting and/or sewing skills are practiced and brought to harmonious, artistic expression.”
My son, Toshman, is in the midst of making his Class 6 doll. Last week he brought his doll home from school unfinished. I was kind of surprised because handwork doesn’t usually make its way home until it is complete. So I asked why he had been allowed to bring home his doll. His reply actually made me blush. He said that he had asked his teacher if he could bring home his doll to finish up the hair because he was having a hard time and wanted to get my ‘expert’ opinion. I never in a million years could have imagined this conversation. I am so grateful and blessed to have ‘Expert Doll Maker’ as one of the ways that my children view me.
