The Adventures of Lucita – Part 14

For those who are new (hello!) Lucita is a Bamboletta ambassador that is travelling in Guatemala with my friend Heather from Project Somos. Heather is working hard to establish Project Somos, an eco village for orphaned and abandoned children. To learn more about this amazing project please visit their site – Project Somos

We have just over two weeks left in Guatemala. Lucita has mixed feelings about leaving. As exciting as it will be to return to Canada and all that it is familiar, there is something about Guatemala that gets into your blood. Pending Mexico’s status, we are scheduled to fly to Mexico City on May 20th for a 12 hour stopover. From there, we will fly back to Dallas where our car awaits us. We will then take three weeks to drive back to Canada, giving Project Somos presentations along the way. We’ll be in Dallas, El Paso, Phoenix, Los Angeles, The Bay Area, Portland, Seattle and Whidbey Island so far. We’ll post the events on Facebook and on our website when confirmed.

I am very excited right now.  On May 10th, the Nobel Women’s Initiative will take place here in Antigua, Guatemala. Six of the seven women who have received Nobel Peace Prizes will gather for a three day conference, along with other prominent women from around the world. The event is by invitation only and I feel very honoured to have been accepted as a volunteer! I’ve already been involved with some great behind the scenes preparations. Very fun!

Lucita felt her first earthquake just a couple of hours ago. It was long and steady. Our apartment swayed from side to side and the windows rattled. Apparently it was a 6.1! We are all fine and have not heard if there was any damage. It is a pretty humbling experience.

Yesterday we were back at the land, once again. We are now preparing to embark on a fundraising campaign to raise the funds to purchase this incredible oasis! Lucita spent some time climbing some of the amazing trees on the land yesterday. She’s wearing one of her new sweaters made by Sandra and the necklace made by our friend Jenn.

Hasta Luego!
